Do the math. There's a lot more of the world that's unpaved than there is perfect tarmac. The answer? The Diverge Sport A1 from Specialized, a full capable street, dirt road, gravel path, anywhere-you-want-to-ride exploration machine. Specialized A1 aluminum makes for a light, fast frame and a FACT carbon fork soaks up the road chatter out front. Some days it feels like you can't find a flat bit of ground to pedal across, and that's when Shimano's 18-speed Sora drivetrain shines. Hills, flats, and descents, it has the quick-shifting, wide gear range performance it takes to conquer any and all roads, while a pair of Tektro disc brakes put the stops to the fun when needed. And a full selection of Specialized components, including a supportive Body Geometry saddle, check the final boxes.

I picked up this 2016 version of the 52 CM Specialized Diverge and have been loving it ever since. Great color combos catch the eyes of cyclists and cars alike, safety first..As a first time rider, you just can't complain. Tires: This bike can handle both road and dirt terrains, although you're better off with a secondary set of tires as the default punctures quickly. Brakes: Disc brakes make your downhill feel much safer. Specialized always produces good quality builds. Frame: Using an aluminum alloy is totally fine, however if you plan to ride extensively, pony up for the carbon version as it will make a HUGE difference. Pedals: These are bulky and heavy, but good for beginners to learn on. Find some clip-ins and shoes and you'll feel the efficiency. Seat: It's stiff, find one of your preference, especially if you're going to be riding 20-30+ miles uphill. Ultimately, Specialized gets most of the credit for a solid price-point and very maintainable bike for a beginner like me, but visit Mike's Bike's Los Gatos for the best Customer Service and doing their job to get you ready to roll.
